Museum Sub-Brand Project: CRISPR Exhibit
This assignment was to create a sub-brand for a new museum exhibit, choosing CRISPR as my topic. For this assignment I selected an actual museum to use, but for the sake of my portfolio I have removed any of their specific branding to avoid copyright infringement. For this assignment I created a catalog cover, an exhibit entry, a tote bag, and a website for both desktop and mobile viewing.
I used the museum’s website to see how they present their existing exhibits, as well as their brand guidelines, to create designs that fit seamlessly into their design system. When I was designing the graphics, I knew it was important to communicate what CRISPR is, so I chose to use only colors from their brand guidelines. These colors not only provided enough range to communicate what DNA looks like but also helped the graphics align with the rest of the brand.
Their website uses white text that blends into the body of the site, and I applied this approach to my designs by using white space on the catalog to show exhibit details. For the exhibit entry panel, I reused my DNA graphics so they could act as a guide for visitors to follow throughout the exhibit. For the website, I looked closely at their current layout and made adjustments that not only fit into my sub-brand system but also redesigned how the rest of the site looked overall.
